THE GOLDEN MAUL

INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS OF THIS PROVINCE

OVERVIEW

The Golden Maul is an initiative by the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Scottish Borders to recognize outstanding achievements within the Province.  Participation is not compulsory but is very much encouraged as we are sure you can think of someone who is worthy of a nomination.

CRITERIA FOR RECOGNITION

There are no strict criteria for this award. Any member of this Province who is in Good Standing can nominate anyone within the Province who is in Good Standing by explaining why they believe the nominee deserves the award. This could be for exceptional achievements, mentoring other members, community engagement, or going above and beyond in their contributions. The possibilities are endless.

HOW TO NOMINATE SOMEONE

Information on how to nominate someone online was distributed to the Lodges in August 2026, if you need a reminder of the link, please ask your Lodge Secretary or any member of the Commission. Alternatively, you could  send an email with your name, contact telephone number, the name of the person you are nominating and their Lodge number, along with the reasons why you are nominating them. The more detailed the information, the better. The closing date for nominations is the close of business on 15 January 2027.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

After the closing date, the Commission will review all nominations and select a worthy winner. If the Commission cannot reach a collective decision, the Provincial Master will make the final choice. The winner will be announced and presented with the Golden Maul at the dinner following the Installation of Provincial Grand Lodge Office-bearers on 20 February 2027. The winner can keep the Golden Maul for a year before returning it for the next recipient.

NEED MORE INFORMATION?

If you need more information, please contact the Provincial Secretary.

WELL DONE AND THANKS

We hope you will be able to fully embrace this initiative to recognise and reward those in the Province who deserve it. Thank you in advance for your support.

gOLDEN MAUL PRESENTED

Bro. Brian Davis PM - First Ever Winner of the Golden Maul.

At the annual Installation of Provincial Grand Lodge Office-bearers on 21 February 2026, the first ever winner of the "Golden Maul" was announced.  Further to this, the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, Bro. James Thom, along with the Worshipful Provincial Grand Secretary, Bro. David Bell, had the pleasure and privilege of visiting the Regular Meeting of the Hawick Lodge No. 111 on Thursday, 26 February 2026 to present it to the worthy winner.

The Provincial Grand Secretary read the following.

"Brethren, following a raft of nominations, The Commission faced the hard task of choosing one Brother who epitomised the values of Freemasonry.

They carried out their task diligently and after much discussion, they chose a Brother who can rightly be described as an unsung hero within their Lodge and who's work behind the scenes contributes to a positive masonic experience for members and visitors alike.

His service is not restricted to within the Lodge. He has served the wider community with the same dedication.

He has raised money for charity with sponsored walks and has helped a countless number of those less fortunate by working in local foodbanks, even supplying vegetables from his own allotment for distribution.

Being an ex-serviceman, he continued to serve by helping the veteran community by working in a local veteran's café.

Brethren, the winner of the Golden Maul for this, the inaugural year of its presentation is Brother Brian Davis, Past Master of The Hawick Lodge No. 111".

The Provincial Master Presented Bro. Brian with the maul, along with a certificate and a small gift.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE BRIAN!!
